Not all musical instruments are created equal! This list is designed as a guide for parents who looking to purchase a new or used instrument. If you chose to purchase an instrument brand other than those listed below, please make sure that the instrument has serial number stamped on the instrument and that you know where the instrument was manufactured (country of origin). The country in which an instrument was “engineered” or “designed” is not an assurance of quality, nor is it an guarantee that it will be repairable when the need arises. Also, please be very careful if you shop on Internet auction sites, in discount warehouses, or discount chair stores-your child’s progress may be hindered by an instrument of poor quality! If the price is too good to be true, there is a reason.
Below are quality musical instrument brands. When in doubt, please contact Mrs. Ramsey.
Flute: Yamaha
Clarinet: Yamaha, Vito, Buffet
Alto Saxophone: Yamaha, Vito, Selmer
Trumpet/Trombone/Euphonium: Yamaha, Bach, Conn
Percussion*: Yamaha, Ludwig
*Percussionists need a bell kit that includes a drum pad. I highly recommend a bell kit that has an umbrella style stand and a carrying case with wheels. The umbrella style stand is much easier for students to put together and the wheels make bringing it back and forth between home and school more convenient for students.
Please be aware of the spelling of the reputable instrument brands. Unfortunately, some low-quality brands have similar names that are spelled slightly differently.
